چکیده

In this article, we show that the projection-free, snapshot-based, balanced truncation method can be applied directly to unstable systems. We prove that even for unstable systems, the unmodified balanced proper orthogonal decomposition algorithm theoretically yields a converged transformation that balances the Gramians (including the unstable subspace). We then apply the method to a spatially developing unstable system and show that it results in reduced-order models of similar quality to the ones obtained with existing methods. Due to the unbounded growth of unstable modes, a practical restriction on the final impulse response simulation time appears, which can be adjusted depending on the desired order of the reduced-order model. Recommendations are given to further reduce the cost of the method if the system is large and to improve the performance of the method if it does not yield acceptable results in its unmodified form. Finally, the method is applied to the linearized flow around a cylinder at Re = 100 to show that it actually is able to accurately reproduce impulse responses for more realistic unstable large-scale systems in practice. The well-established approximate balanced truncation numerical framework therefore can be safely applied to unstable systems without any modifications. Additionally, balanced reduced-order models can readily be obtained even for large systems, where the computational cost of existing methods is prohibitive.

Model Reduction for fluids, Using Balanced Proper Orthogonal Decomposition

Many of the tools of dynamical systems and control theory have gone largely unused for fluids, because the governing equations are so dynamically complex, both high-dimensional and nonlinear. Model reduction involves finding low-dimensional models that approximate the full high-dimensional dynamics. This paper compares three different methods of model reduction: proper orthogonal decomposition ...

Model order reduction for discrete unstable control systems using a balanced truncation approach

Mathematical modeling of problems occurring in natural and engineering sciences often results in a very large dynamical system. Efficient techniques for model order reduction are required, therefore, to reduce the complexity of the system. Almost all such techniques require the dynamical system to be asymptotically stable. Balanced truncation is a well-known and approved model reduction method....

Balanced Truncation Model Reduction for a Class of Descriptor Systems with Application to the Oseen Equations

We discuss the computation of balanced truncation model reduction for a class of descriptor systems which include the semidiscrete Oseen equations with time-independent advection and the linearized Navier–Stokes equations, linearized around a steady state. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we show how to apply standard balanced truncation model reduction techniques, which apply to dy...

Feedback control of unstable steady states of flow past a flat plate using reduced-order estimators

We present an estimator-based control design procedure for flow control, using reduced-order models of the governing equations linearized about a possibly unstable steady state. The reduced-order models are obtained using an approximate balanced truncation method that retains the most controllable and observable modes of the system. The original method is valid only for stable linear systems, a...

Reduction Methods for Feedback Stabilization of Fluid Flows

This dissertation deals with reduction of two classes of dynamical systems in order to make them suitable for control design using linear systems theory. The first class consists of the large-dimensional systems governing fluid flows, for which we employ dimension reduction techniques for stabilization of unstable steady states. The second class consists of systems with a continuous symmetry, f...
